Recycling Committee

Chair: Hank Sammon, hanksammon@gmail.com
Committee “meetings” – 9-12 a.m., first Saturday of every month

The Recycling Committee is a laid back but very committed group of people whose mission is to bring recycling services to Northern Liberties. Activities include:

  1. Monthly recycling program on the first Saturday of every month.
  2. Book Drives, which occur generally every three months.
  3. Special pickups – where and when possible.
  4. Keeping residents informed of recycling requirements and updated information.
  5. Attend organized recycling activities.

VOLUNTEERS: help keep the collection running smoothly and it’s a great way to meet your neighbors, lend a hand to the community, and get a little fresh air and exercise. Please contact Hank Sammon at 267-614-9502 to volunteer. Proceeds from recycling go to the NLNA and help fund neighborhood projects.

NORTHERN LIBERTIES TRASH & RECYCLING COORDINATOR:
Lara Kelly is the neighborhood's new trash and recycling coordinator. Lara is vigorously addressing both trash and recycling issues. She is researching trash and recycling companies available to businesses, helping get empty lots cleaned up, and meeting with the City recycling director, Keep Philadelphia Beautiful, and other pro-active environmental organizations. She hopes to encourage corner businesses to sponsor trash cans and will work to educate the commercial sector about their responsibilities in regard to trash. If you have any questions about trash or recycling or have a trash issue to report call the Northern Liberties Neighbors Association office at 215-627-6562 and leave a message for Lara. You can reach her by e-mail at trash@NLNA.org

Upcoming Recycling Dates
Feburary 2nd, March 1st, April 5th, May 3rd.
All recycling times are 9 A.M. to 11:30 AM near the corner of 2nd and Spring Garden St.
Recycling helps generate revenue for the NLNA and is good for the environment, so please recycle as much as you can.

What can I recycle?
plastic bottles marked with a 1 or 2, narrow on the top and wider at the bottom. Please rinse out bottles and remove caps. NO straight-sided “tub” or “bucket” type containers that are used for take-out foods, no flower pots, or any other plastic packaging even if marked with a 1 or 2. Small cat litter containers with narrow necks and spouts are okay; large, wide-mouthed litter containers are NOT. NO plastic that contained automobile products or other caustic or poisonous material.
ALL paper and cardboard, including junk mail, phonebooks, magazines, newspaper, and cereal-weight and corrugated boxes. If it came from a tree and it’s not still wood you can recycle it! Bring your materials in a reusable container.
NO PLASTIC BAGS, ALUMINUM, GLASS, OR TIN. Plastic bags can be recycled at many area grocery stores, and aluminum, tin, and glass are picked up curbside by the city every other trash day.
