Project Description
This community center will turn a currently abandoned and blighted property into a central location for the wide variety of meetings, programs, classes, performances, and support services that make the Northern Liberties neighborhood a vibrant and exciting community. Creative architecture, flexible spaces, and sound financial planning will allow this community center to fulfill many dreams. Timeline
“Fall/1998” – Project conceived by NLCDC – To create a self sustaining income producing mechanism to house the NLNA/NLCDC offices, meetings and through rental income pay for staff and overhead costs in lieu of NAC yearly grant.
“10/98-7/12/99” – The Mifflin School (site #1) – 808 N. 3rd St.
- asking price $125K – offered $85K
- agreement of sale for $85K on 1/22/99
- withdrew 7/12/99 – hadn’t received the $100K grant at this point
“8/99-12/99” – St. John’s Church (site #2) – 1025 N. 3rd St.
- offered $155K
- bought by developer for cash
“12/99 – 4/2000” – Vending Cart Co. (site #3) – 908 N. 3rd St.
- offered $175K – agreement 2/16/2000
- owner takes property off the market after lessee pays back rental payments
“4/2000 – 8/2000” – Ruba Club (site #4) – 414 Green St.
- offered $200K – 6/1/2000
- offered $235K – 6/28/2000
- Board of Directors decides not to sell – 8/2000
“8/2000 –4/2001” – Liberty Lands (site #5) – 3rd St. N. of Poplar
- developed plan to build on neighborhood owned park
- plan lost steam as consensus was to not build on the site
“8/2000 – Present” – 3rd & Fairmount (site #6) – 700-704 N. 3rd St.
- Zoning Committee and neighborhood campaign to prevent Recreation Center from demolishing buildings to create parking lot.
